Song Exploder
Song exploder is both a documentary and a podcast, explaining how songs are made in detail with personal stories from different guests. It tells factual information and shows interviews from different professionals. I think Song Exploder is inspiring as it tells both facts about music but also very personal stories and interviews from different artists. It gives the opportunity to find new artists and learn more about them whilst learning more about music itself.
The conventions included are:
An Interview with the Artist- Builds connections with the audience
Live Performances- Shows the artist's skill
Archived Footage- The use of past interviews and old performances are played

My Next Guest with David Letterman
Although this documentary/ interview show isn't specifically about music factually. I like how Letterman brings in music stars to talk about their experiences on making music and how they can then tell personal stories about how they do it, whilst also learning tips. I like how Letterman sits them down in a casual setting first and switches between clips of the music studio where the guest shows equipment and talk through.
Codes and Conventions:
-Behind the scenes- following the artist by day persoanlly
Archived footage- Past live shows are shown to show the growth and journey
Emphasis on the Creating song process- Being in the studio breaking apart the song
It Was The Music
The way this video features live music from different musicians perspective in a band is very inspiring. At the start they featured some scenery clips to set the mood and show personally the surrounding of the musician. I think switching the musicians perspectives is breaking the convention as most emphasise connecting with the audience as whole and together.
The Wrecking Crew Documentary
I like this documentary because it has 100 percent focus on the one band, The Wrecking Crew. It features a really simplistic but effective introduction and the usage of old photographs and live music videos from the past which furthermore creates character for the band and fits their genre they are going for.
Archived footage- Real past live music shown to show growth
Springsteen on Broadway
In this Documentary I'm inspired by the way it features live music and how the background is very sophisticated with a dark background which connotes the professionalism and also links with the backing of Broadway. I like how the interviewer asks in depth questions and how the artist can give a full depth answer and demonstrate physically.
Archived footage- To show growth from how they started as child to the binary opposition of themselves being successful
Live Performances- To show skills
Personal Monologue- The artists being vulnerable connects with the viewer and it is more likely to stick with them.
Count Me In
In this documentary it doesn't follow a particular artist or band but rather many, which I think is nice for all fans to watch and compare the process of music making. I'm also interested in the colouring they used as it is a lot more contrasted.
The use of archived footage and photography of different artists from live shows and interviews are played to show the evolutional growth of music and different genres.
I think this show breaks the convention as the aim is to connect with a specific artist but by using a large range suggests that the show is more factual in the sense of education rather than making it personal and authentic which is usually the convention for most shows, as they want to promote the artist.
